In the Vestige series, the surface usually shows evidence of what happened inside — Yeon-li layers cut open, geometry imposed on a rounded form. W414_2023 does none of this. The Yang-gu kaolin is not cut, not decorated, not structured beyond the act of throwing. The cylinder is as pure as it gets.
This is not a simpler piece. It is a harder one. Without the visual interest of faceting or pattern, the weight falls entirely on the material and the proportion. Yang-gu kaolin has been used for Korean ceremonial vessels for centuries — its warm, matte, slightly granular surface is immediately distinct from processed porcelain. At 41.4 cm, the narrowness of the form (10.2 cm across) gives the piece an almost architectural scale. It occupies a room differently from anything else in the series.
