Yang-gu kaolin has been mined in Gangwon-do for centuries. It is the clay of Joseon white porcelain — the moonsjar, the scholar's brush rest, the ritual vessel. In Vestige_Y291_2024, Kim Deokho uses it as both material and reference: the pale, slightly granular surface is unmistakably Korean, unmistakably old in its resonance.
The blue wave bands at mid-height is revealed by the matter cutting. Kim Deokho's gesture is compressed and repeated, stacked into five bands that read as pattern from a distance and as individual marks up close. Above and below, the faceted clay surface continues uninterrupted. The contrast between the geometric and the calligraphic is the subject of this piece.

"In Kim Deokho's Vestige series, every surface mark is a record of time — unplanned, uncontrolled, and entirely unrepeatable. A thought drawn in clay."
