Vase I is built as a column rather than a vessel in the conventional sense — its opening is narrow relative to its height, and the piece reads first as a standing form, second as a container. Six irregular vertical channels are carved into the surface from just below the rim to the foot, their depth and rhythm shifting slightly as they descend, so the piece never quite repeats itself.
At this scale, the psychological register Lee Songam associates with black — weight, mystery, solitude, silence — becomes physically legible. The piece asks to be walked around rather than viewed from a single position, each shift in angle changing how the carved channels catch the light.
