Most of the tension in Vase III sits at the top: a scalloped, uneven rim that dips low on one side of the piece and climbs high on the other, while the hexagonal body below remains straight and composed. The contrast gives the piece a sense of arrested movement, as if the clay were still settling when the fire caught it.
This kind of asymmetry is central to how Lee Songam works — he builds toward forms that ‘depart from the round and the contained,’ letting the piece hold tension rather than resolve into comfort.
