Most of Lee Songam's carved vessels organise their surface vertically. Vase V breaks that pattern: its wave-like ridges travel on a diagonal, wrapping loosely around the body as they climb from foot to rim. The result reads less like a static column and more like a single line drawn continuously around a turning form.
Lee Songam has described his shapes as departing from the round and the contained — outward expressions of an internal energy he cannot fully account for in advance. The diagonal torsion of Vase V is a clear register of that restlessness.

"Black is not a surface choice. It is the carrier of what I am trying to say — weight, mystery, solitude, silence. These are not abstract qualities."
