Unlike the hexagonal, faceted vases elsewhere in the collection, Vase VI is built around volume rather than plane — a dense, rounded mass with a mouth so narrow it almost disappears into the shoulder. The channels carved into its surface are wide and deep, closer to riverbeds than to seams, and they wander rather than run straight.
Weight is one of the qualities Lee Songam names directly when describing what black carries for him — ‘weight, mystery, solitude, silence.’ Of all the smaller works in this collection, Vase VI is the one where that weight is most physically present.
