Large Black is the most panoramic of Shin Suyeon's open Seolsan vessels — a wide, shallow trough whose rim rises into sharp, layered peaks unlike anything else in the smaller works. Ridgelines recede across the interior and exterior walls in overlapping bands, suggesting distance and depth rather than a single silhouette.
At this size, the coiling and carving process that defines the Seolsan series becomes a more physical undertaking — closer to building a landscape than shaping a vessel. The result holds the presence of an actual mountain range compressed onto a tabletop scale.

About the artist
Shin Suyeon 신수연
“The series moves freely between functional vessel and sculptural object. Some pieces fit in a hand; others command a wall. What remains constant is their stillness.”
