Small Black stretches the Seolsan form along its long axis, so that its rim reads less like a single peak and more like a full range seen in profile — rising, dipping into a valley, and rising again toward the opposite end. The surface is left with a rougher, combed texture, closer to wind-scored snow than to smooth clay.
Shin Suyeon builds every piece in this series the same way: coils of dark clay stacked into a rough form, then carved and marked with white slip by hand. At this elongated scale, the labour of that repetition becomes visible as a kind of horizon line.

About the artist
Shin Suyeon 신수연
“The series moves freely between functional vessel and sculptural object. Some pieces fit in a hand; others command a wall. What remains constant is their stillness.”
