Kim Hojung
“The Flow Series is inspired by ancient vessels, including Cypriot jugs from around 2400–1600 BCE and Korean Neolithic comb-pattern pottery. This long-standing interest has developed into an exploration of natural phenomena, as well as an investigation into how the surface texture of ceramics can reveal the processes of their making.
In a 2017 collaborative project with the Royal College of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, I selected pre-1950 ceramic and glass objects from the museum’s collection and sought to translate their historical visual language into a contemporary one. Building on this research, I turned to Korean Neolithic comb-pattern pottery—culturally more personal and closely connected—which has had the most direct influence on the forms of the current Flow Series.
Through the use of color, the work expresses the potential and energy that connect tradition and modernity, while focusing on the process in which points, lines, and planes come together through chance to form new compositional orders. Blue reflects a sense of longing for the infinite spaces of nature, such as the sky and the sea, while teal green evokes lush forests, offering a sense of rest and quiet natural calm within everyday life.”
