Blessing I is the centrepiece of Kim Hojung's Blue Moon series — and one of the most ambitious works she has produced. At nearly 34 cm in height and 33 cm in diameter, the vessel is monumental: its presence in a room is immediate. The near-perfect spherical form draws on two ancient traditions simultaneously: the Korean moon jar, whose rounded form embodies completeness and abundance, and Korean Neolithic pottery, whose formal logic has been at the heart of Kim Hojung's practice for over a decade.
The blue surface — built through a sustained process of gesture and mark — covers the entire vessel without interruption. Each mark is made once, without revision. Blue is not incidental: it holds, in Kim Hojung's own words, "a sense of longing for the infinite spaces of nature — sky and sea."
To call this work Blessing is not incidental. It carries the idea of abundance — a vessel so full that it overflows — expressed through the density of surface-making and the sheer physical presence of the form. Wheel-thrown, hand-shaped over many sessions, and high-temperature fired, Blessing I is a singular achievement in Kim Hojung's practice.
